Merzouga, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is about 560 km from Marrakech. There is no straight, fast road: the route crosses the High Atlas and several valleys, which is exactly what makes it beautiful. Here are all the ways to get there, with times and honest pros and cons.
1. Private tour with driver (most popular)
Time: 2 days with stops (overnight in Dades) or 1 long day (9–10 hours of driving).
Cost: shared between your group.
A private 4×4 or minivan with a local driver-guide picks you up at your riad. You stop where you want — Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Valley of Roses, Dades and Todra gorges — and arrive at the dunes for the sunset camel ride. This is how most of our guests travel; see the 3-day Merzouga tour.
Pros: flexible, comfortable, you see everything on the way, no driving stress.
Cons: more expensive than a bus for solo travellers.
2. Shared group tour
Time: 3 days / 2 nights typically.
A minibus with 12–16 people on a fixed schedule. Cheapest organised option, but you follow the group’s pace and stops.
3. Public bus (Supratours / CTM)
Time: about 11–13 hours to Rissani or Merzouga, usually overnight.
Supratours runs from Marrakech towards Errachidia/Rissani, with connections to Merzouga. Comfortable enough and very cheap, but you travel mostly at night and miss the scenery; you then need to arrange a camel trek separately.
4. Self-drive rental car
Time: 9–10 hours without stops.
Roads are paved and in decent condition, but the Tizi n’Tichka pass has many bends, trucks and, in winter, occasional snow. Avoid driving at night: animals, cyclists and unlit vehicles are common. A 4×4 is not necessary to reach Merzouga village.
5. Flying
You can fly Marrakech–Errachidia via Casablanca, then drive about 2 hours to Merzouga. It saves time but costs more and you miss the best landscapes. There are also small airports at Ouarzazate and Zagora.

- Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), 2 hours of mountain curves.
- → Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO kasbah (see our guide).
- → Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa”.
- → Valley of Roses and the Dades and Todra gorges.
- → Erfoud, Rissani and finally Merzouga.
Our advice
If you have only 2 days, consider Zagora instead — Merzouga in two days means too much driving. With 3 days or more, Merzouga is worth every kilometre. Read Merzouga vs Zagora and the best time to visit.
