An hour from the heat of Marrakech, the High Atlas rises to 4,167 m at Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. Berber villages cling to the slopes, walnut trees line the rivers, and mule tracks connect valleys where life follows the seasons. Here is how to explore them.
Imlil: the gateway
At 1,740 m, Imlil is the base for Toubkal treks and the easiest mountain escape from Marrakech (about 1.5 hours by road). From the village you can walk to Aroumd, visit the Kasbah du Toubkal terrace, or hike to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine.
Climbing Mount Toubkal
Duration: 2 days minimum (refuge at 3,207 m, summit push at dawn).
Difficulty: no technical climbing in summer, but long steep sections and altitude; crampons and an ice axe are required from December to April.
Season: April–October for hikers; winter ascents need experience and equipment.
A licensed mountain guide is mandatory in the Toubkal National Park area, and mules can carry the bags.
Ourika Valley

Other valleys worth knowing
- Ouirgane: gentle hills, a lake and olive groves, good for easy walks and a quiet night.
- Aït Bougomez (“Happy Valley”): remote and beautiful terraced fields, 5–6 hours from Marrakech.
- Telouet: the ruined Glaoui kasbah on the old caravan road, combined with Ait Benhaddou.
- Oukaïmeden: Morocco’s ski resort at 2,600 m, with prehistoric rock carvings.
Meeting Berber culture
Amazigh (Berber) families welcome visitors with mint tea, bread and argan oil. A lunch in a village home is often the highlight of the day: tagine cooked on charcoal, in a house with a view over the valley.
