Morocco is a warm, family-friendly country: children are welcome everywhere, and the mix of camels, kasbahs, mountains and beaches keeps them interested. Here is how to plan a family trip that works for everyone.
Is Morocco good for children?
Yes. Moroccan culture is very family-oriented, and staff in riads and restaurants are usually happy to help with children. The main challenges are distances, heat in summer, and busy medinas — all manageable with a private vehicle and a relaxed pace.
Best activities for families
- Camel ride in the dunes: the highlight for most kids. Short rides are possible; younger children can go by 4×4 — see our camel trekking guide.
- Night in a desert camp: campfire, drums, stars and sandboarding down the dunes.
- Ourika Valley: river, waterfalls and a Berber house visit, only an hour from Marrakech.
- Ouzoud Waterfalls: boats, monkeys and a picnic — see the day trips guide.
- Essaouira: beach, horse and camel rides, fishing port and kite surfing lessons for teens.
- Ait Benhaddou: a real film-set castle to explore.
- Cooking class or a bread-making afternoon in a village home.
Planning tips
- Limit driving to 3–4 hours a day with breaks; consider Zagora (2 days) instead of Merzouga (3 days) for small children.
- Book riads with a pool and a family suite; many have interconnected rooms.
- Bring car seats if your children need them — they are not always available.
- Travel in spring or autumn; avoid the Sahara in July and August with young kids.
Food for kids
Chicken tagine without spices, couscous, omelettes, bread, grilled meat skewers, fresh fruit and yoghurt are all easy. Ask for “sans piment” (no chilli) — Moroccan food is flavourful but rarely hot. Bottled water only, and be careful with raw salads in the first days. Our food guide has more ideas.
Health and safety
- Sun protection: hats, SPF 50, plenty of water.
- Pack rehydration salts and basic medicines; pharmacies are good and everywhere.
- Hold hands in busy souks and agree on a meeting point.
- Travel insurance covering children is strongly recommended.
