“Merzouga or Zagora?” is the question we hear most often from travellers planning a desert trip from Marrakech. Both offer camel rides, a night in a Berber camp and unforgettable sunsets, but they are very different experiences. Here is a clear comparison to help you choose.
Merzouga: the classic Sahara
Merzouga is a small village at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of golden sand dunes that rise up to 150 metres. This is the postcard image of the Sahara: endless waves of orange sand that change colour through the day. It is about 560 km from Marrakech (9–10 hours of driving), so the trip is usually done in 3 days minimum.

Travellers who want the real, big-dune Sahara experience, photographers and anyone with at least 3 days.
Zagora: the short desert escape
Zagora lies in the Draa Valley, about 360 km from Marrakech (7 hours). The dunes near Zagora (Tinfou, and further south Erg Chigaga) are smaller than Erg Chebbi, but the route through the Draa Valley, with its long palm grove and old kasbahs, is beautiful. The trip can be done in 2 days and 1 night.
Best for
Travellers with limited time, families with young children who prefer less driving, and those who want a taste of the desert rather than the full Sahara.

Our honest advice
If you have 3 days or more, choose Merzouga. The size of the dunes and the silence of Erg Chebbi at sunrise are worth the extra driving, and the itinerary includes some of Morocco’s most impressive landscapes. It also allows you to finish your trip in Fes instead of returning to Marrakech.
If you only have 2 days, Zagora is a good choice: you still cross the Atlas, visit Ait Benhaddou, ride a camel and sleep in a desert camp.
What about Erg Chigaga?
Erg Chigaga, beyond M’Hamid, has large and very remote dunes reached only by 4×4. It is wild and quiet but requires more time and a higher budget. Ask us if you want a tailor-made Chigaga itinerary.
